Big River Trail gets nearly $3M to extend bicycle network in Arkansas

The Big River Trail has scored a multimillion-dollar investment.

West Memphis recently secured $2.2 million in Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) funding for the Big River Trail, plus $700,000 in matching funds provided by the West Memphis Advertising Promotion Commission.

Dow McVean, chairman of the board for the Big River Park Conservancy, told the MBJ that the total, $2.9 million investment will pay for the next segment of trail, tying Marion, Arkansas, into Big River Crossing and Downtown Memphis.

Big River Trail currently encompasses 70 miles of graded paths atop of Mississippi River levees from a trailhead at the Big River Crossing south to Marianna, Arkansas. Its trailhead is Big River Crossing, which connects Tennessee and Arkansas over the Mississippi River.
